Philips HTS6600/37
$499.00
Released September, 2004
The Pros:Code-based compatibility system is ideal for users with out-of-region DVDs - international titles can be viewed by simply entering a compatible remote code. Gloss black finish and wood-grain components are aesthetically pleasing - unit fits nicely within existing home theater configurations. Dimming capabilities significantly increase console display functionality - component is sleek and unobtrusive, even when powered on during viewing.
The Cons:Central wheel on the unit's remote is seemingly prone to malfunction - component can easily become caught under plastic surrounding, appearing to "freeze" certain menus. Users report drastic differences in sound quality based on firmware version - users must ensure that their device software is up-to-date at all times. Subwoofer component is very heavy, and in reality is much larger than advertised - ~50lb. weight is not conducive to many home theater configurations.
The Philips HTS6600/37 is a DVD home theater system that uses a simulated surround sound to provide modern home theater technology without the clutter. Using what Philips calls "Ambisound" technology, the distinguishing feature of this package is that it splits 5.1 surround into just two speakers, which then use "the combined effect of psychoacoustic phenomena, array processing and precisely angled driver positioning" to deliver a simulation of a proper surround system, with 240 watts of power and both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding.

The HTS6600/37 is also noteworthy for offering compatibility with portable devices through an MP3 player input that connects to your MP3 player's headphone jack, and a USB input for flashdrives and other portable media, plus an AM/FM tuner. The system features a DVD player with HDMI output and upscaling capability, although it is not 1080p, only 1080i and 720p.
